I finally decided to stop bouncing back and forth making excuses left and right about whether or not to back a project I’m excited about. This of course has to do with throwing my money behind a game still in the early stages of development. Something I said I would never do in the past for obvious reasons. Paying for promises instead of a product is dangerous and inevitably never ends well. So what made me change my mind and invest in the unfinished product that is Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen?
It’s quite simple actually. I’m not a fan of the current state of MMORPG’s. I’ve gone into a lengthy discussion as to why i feel like this and what exactly I’m looking for in an MMORPG. Basically, I’ve lost faith in larger studios ability to make a game I want to spend years playing. That sort of play style seems to be falling to the side as far as popularity goes. That’s perfectly fine for the players that enjoy hopping in and out, but it’s not for me. I lean towards the niche old school approach of the smaller like-minded community focused player base. I can see people’s eyes rolling already, but that’s fine. Not everyone needs to like everything.
Pantheon seems to be checking off a lot of what I’m looking for in an MMORPG. Whether or not the game actually delivers anything close to that is a gamble I was willing to take at this time. I believe in the core concepts of the studio and i hope they translate well into an actual complete game at some point. I also understand i could be looking back a year from now at this post and smacking my forehead, but what’s life without a little chance? I do welcome all the “I told you so’s” if the game doesn’t pan out. At least that way the conversation can continue.
As far as the actual backing goes, i went with the Knight’s Pledge as that seemed the most reasonable for me. I not only get alpha and beta access but two copies of the game. I feel that’s completely fair when compared to what most other MMO’s charge today for less. I know the price seems like a lot to some, and to me as well actually, for an unfinished game. I believe they’re phasing out this tier soon and introducing cheaper alternatives in the coming months. There should be better options for anyone else willing to take this gamble with me. For now, I’m preparing to be disappointed and hoping for the best. Bring on the Alpha!
